We take a look at some of the best retro video games you can play on PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox…
Rez Infinite
Console – PlayStation
This HD remaster of a 2001 Dreamcast rail shooter has you playing as a hacker trying to reboot a supercomputer before it shuts itself down for good. Locking onto viruses and firing adds notes to the pulsing electronic soundtrack, and if you have a PASVR headset, you can even play the game in virtual reality!
Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow
Console – Nintendo
Long before Sun and Moon, the legendary Pokemon series started with three famous Game Boy titles. See where Nintendo’s ultra-popular monster-catching franchise began with Red and Blue, which contain the original 151 Pokemon. Then try Yellow, which gives you Pikachu at the very beginning of the game.
Super Mario 64
Console – Nintendo
The Nintendo 64’s ground-breaking Super Mario 64 is perhaps one of the most important retro games you can play, simple because it was one of the very first 3D platformers ever! And once you have tracked down and collected all the hidden stars, travel back to Super Mario World, hop on Yoshi’s back, and experience some of the best 2D platforming ever made. Or, for something a little more recent, check out Super Mario Galaxy and go planet hopping.
Nights Into Dreams…
Console – Xbox
Ever wondered where dreams come from? Travel to Nightopia with Claris and Elliot in this strange and psychedelic 3D journey. Glide through rings and gates to complete each imaginative level before the timer runs out, then tackle the bizarre bosses. Flying has never been such fun!
EarthBound
Console – Nintendo
After a meteorite crashes into their neighbourhood, young Ness and his friends set out to investigate and that is where this Super Nintendo role-playing game begins. An emotional story, interesting places to discover and some really weird enemies make this great for gamers who want something a little different.
Kirby’s Dream Collection
Console – Nintendo
Experience the famous pink puff-ball’s first set of platforming adventures in this excellent Wii collection. From the original black and white Kirby’s Dream Land to the more modern Kirby 64, the gameplay stays simple: get through the levels by sucking up enemies and taking their powers. It is easy to learn, and Kirby never gets indigestion!
DuckTales: Remastered
Console – Xbox
A remake of the classic NES title, this 2D sidescroller puts you in control of Scrooge McDuck on his search for five hidden treasures. Bounce on Scrooge’s cane to defeat enemies and reach special areas within levels. You will also meet different characters from the old DuckTales TV show.
Earthworm Jim HD
Console – Xbox
This hilarious and totally weird sidescroller stars an earthworm inside a spacesuit trying to save Princess What’s Her Name. Blast through odd and gross levels and battle against bosses like Professor Monkey-For-A-Head. You can also launch cows using refrigerators, which is just as funny as it sounds.
Donkey Kong 64
Console – Nintendo
Nintendo’s loveable gorilla stars in this massive Nintendo 64 collect-a-thon. Choose from several Kong family members in a quest to stop the evil crocodile King K. Rool. There are tons of bananas to track down and once you hear the Donkey Kong Rap, you will never be able to stop singing it!
Wind Waker HD
Console – Nintendo
Back on the Gamecube in 2003, Link went on a breath-taking cel-shaded journey and now you can experience it in full high definition while using Nintendo. Sail the open seas on a talking boat in search of your sister, who has been kidnapped by the evil Ganon. There are islands to hop, dungeons to conquer and musical melodies to learn using the Wind Waker baton. After you are done sailing, go ahead and try out Ocarina Of Time 3D, which was Link’s very first third-person adventure on the Nintendo 64. And finally, for something a little more retro, try out Oracle Of Seasons and Oracle Of Ages, a pair of time-travelling Game Boy Color titles.
